Grigol Robakidze was a renowned Georgian philosopher, poet and thinker, widely respected for introducing Western ideals to Georgia and sharing Eastern culture with the West. A strong opponent of the Soviet regime, he took refuge in Germany in 1931. Seen as a symbol of free thought and resistance, his legacy inspired the naming of Grigol Robakidze University.
Born on October 28, 1880 in Sviri, Imereti (Georgia), Robakidze studied in Kutaisi, Leipzig, Paris, Juriev and Kazan, though never completed a degree due to World War I. He endured 10 years under Soviet rule, constantly persecuted by the KGB, before fleeing to Germany, where he wrote many of his major works including “The Killed Soul”, “Devil and Mythos” and others.
His writings often explored how dictatorship corrupts the human soul and provided deep insights into political figures of his time. Grigol Robakidze passed away on November 9, 1962, in Geneva, just days after announcing his engagement to Countess Gilza Von Schtrachwitz.
