with Raisa Liparteliani, President of the Georgian Trade Unions Confederation, to discuss key issues related to labour rights. During the session, students raised important questions about how the Labor Code of Georgia protects employees, whether employers can demand resignation letters, the legal ways to protect violated labor rights and the rules regarding unpaid internships.
Nino Shoshitashvili, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at GRUNI, highlighted that the protection of journalists’ labour rights in Georgia needs special attention. She pointed out that long internships, pressure on editorial independence, overtime work and unpaid labour have become common challenges in the journalism profession.
Raisa Liparteliani also focused on issues related to women’s labour rights. She noted that gender wage inequality remains a serious concern, explaining that while the wage gap in European Union countries is about 20 percent, in Georgia it reaches 32 per cent. She also emphasised that women spend an average of 38 hours per week on unpaid domestic and family work.
The meeting concluded with participants expressing hope for continued cooperation between Grigol Robakidze University and the Georgian Trade Unions Confederation.
